Everything Happens for a Riesling
“Piss Bordeaux and Burgundies, flush out a Riesling”- Jay-Z
Paris isn’t where we’ve been, but still pardon our Parisian as France is notably known as one of the most famous wine regions throughout the world. With a variety of options for your palate, it's typically best to have a go-to wine or two of choice when indulging. If you’re looking to expand your range, we’ve got our top picks for both red and white to guide you around the vineyards of France, or at least the wine aisle in your local retailer.
The Reds
Since the beginning of time or 6000BC, wine in particular, red wine has been a common favorite of libations amongst wine-o’s. Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfadel, Malbec, Merlot, Shiraz and Tempranillo are just some of the most popular varietals in the red family. Let's not even get started on red blends which typically contain more than one red grape variety. Bordeaux blends are typically great for beginner wine lovers who are looking for something full bodied, rich in taste, with a hint of sweetness. Started from the bottom—Zinfadel and now we're here—Tempranillo. Our favorite red wine hails from Spain, the Tempranillo grape is grown primarily in the Rioja region with cool climates which yields a lower acidity in the winemaking process. The flavors are bold, bearing aromas that are savory and often times smoky. Tempranillo pairs well with BBQ, Mexican cuisine and Italian dishes.
The Whites
Whether you prefer your whites dry, crisp, or sweet there is something to appease everyone. Many of the white grapes produce flavors that can range from oaky to sweet. The most common type of white varietals are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Riesling and Gewürztraminer. At the Black Wine-O we prefer the semi-sweet Riesling, which bears fruity aromas like pear and green apple. This wine is packed with sugar and very acidic in taste. Some of the best Riesling's we've found are priced reasonably under $20, you can't beat that especially if you're a wine-o on a budget. Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery is one of the oldest wineries in Washington, and most often found on the wine list at your favorite restaurant. Riesling offers balance and is the perfect companion to pork or any fish entree.
